Frequently Asked Questions

These are the sort of things I like to know about people whose blogs I read. If you have any other questions you'd like me to answer, post your question in a comment, and I'll answer it if I can!

Why create a polish blog?

I spend so much time painting my nails, buying polish, thinking of nail art designs, and talking about it, not to mention reading polish blogs and forums online, that I thought it was about time I actually did it productively. I want to share my hobby with other people!

How many polishes do you have?

If you ask most of my friends and colleagues, I have too many! But I think I don’t have enough!

I probably have around 100 full sized polishes, and maybe 50 minis. Enough that they take up a bit of space, but not enough to warrant trying to find something similar to a Helmer (we don’t have Ikea out here!). My collection is growing though- I think I might be addicted! I know I don’t need another sparkly polish, or another purple, but it doesn’t stop me from wanting it.

What’s your favourite polish? What’s your favourite brand?

I don’t think I have a specific favourite polish- although anything teal/electric blue is amongst my favourites!

My favourite regular brand is OPI- I like the range of colours and the formula, and the fact they sell Mini Sets, which gives me more opportunity to try different colours! I’ve recently tried Butter London for the first time, and absolutely loved the formula- if it wasn’t for the price putting me off (close to $40 a bottle!) I’d probably have a lot more of those and that would be my favourite brand.

My favourite indie brands at the moment are Emily de Molly for glitters-in-creams-or-jellies (what do you even call those types of polishes?), and Lush Lacquer for glitter toppers. I need so many more of the former, and have a ridiculous number of minis of the latter!

What polish do you most want to get your hands on?

I have a list of lemmings- polishes I desperately want!- as long as my arm, and maybe I’ll post that here some time. There are some brands I want to try and either haven’t gotten around to yet, or can’t because they’re just not available out here: I’d love to try Julep and Deborah Lippman polishes, but can’t seem to get either here. I haven’t seen any China Glaze around either, and would love to see how that brand compares. Indie wise, I hope to one day try a NerdLacquer polish, would love to see what all of the fuss is about with Lynderellas, and love polishes with interesting bottles- so brands like Daily Lacquer are definitely on my radar for ones to try in the future.

Where do you buy your polishes from?

We don’t have that many places to get polish in NZ, or at least in my part of it. Farmers is a department store here that occasionally has great deals on OPI polishes, and is also the only place I’ve found here to get my Orly base and top coats from. I get most of my OPI minis from TradeMe (NZ version of Ebay) since they’re a bit cheaper on there.

For my indies, I get most of mine from Llarowe.com, as they have a huge selection and, from what I’ve experienced, great customer service. I also buy off Etsy quite a lot, although the postage charges can get incredibly ridiculous at times. I’m always on the lookout for new indies who I can buy from directly and will post to NZ, so if you have any recommendations, let me know!

What are your nail polish goals?

To get my addiction under control and to get much better at nail art. I do okay at the moment, but I’m very critical about my own nails. I’d love to invent some themed nails, and I have a long list of ideas that really just need some time, some patience, and maybe some new brushes. Also to make some new friends via blogging! I’ve spent months and months lurking, reading blogs but being too shy to comment, so hopefully through blogging I’ll meet some like-minded people!

Worst polish related moment?

It’s a bit embarrassing- In one shopping trip, I bought Nicole by OPI ‘Rainbow in the S-Kylie’ because I’d been lusting after OPI Rainbow Collection, and a guillotine slicer for the kitchen. That night, I painstakingly painted my nails with the glitterbomb, waited for it to dry, and started making dinner. I decided to thinly slice the carrots, got distracted and- bam!- sliced the tip off my left index finger.

It was horrific and bloody and painful, and after an hour, when it hadn’t stopped bleeding, I went to the urgent doctors. When they unwrapped my makeshift bandage, the first thing I asked was ‘How’s my manicure?’. I blame it on wooziness from loss of blood!

That was six months ago and although my fingertip grew back pretty quickly, it’s still occasionally tender and the nail bed hasn’t fully reattached. And I struggle to use the polish, since I can’t help picture what it looked like on the half a nail that was still attached.

Best polish related moment?

Any time someone comments on my nails to say how great they look! It’s always a huge boost to hear that other people like what I’m doing with my nails! People in shops, my students, comments online when I post pics- they always give me a huge smile. It makes me happy when I look at my nails, and it’s nice to know looking at them makes other people happy too!
